Pro Tip: Beat the Zion Crowds

Zion's single-canyon geography creates severe crowd concentration. Strategies:

  • Enter before 7 AM — park lots fill 8-9 AM, Zion Canyon Shuttle lines form by 8 AM
  • Park in Springdale — use the free Springdale Town Shuttle to the park entrance + Zion Canyon Shuttle onward
  • Visit off-season — November through February, private vehicles are allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (no shuttle)
  • Angels Landing permit — required for final section; apply via recreation.gov lottery
  • RV / oversized vehicle alert — Mount Carmel Tunnel requires escort for vehicles over 7'10" wide or 11'4" tall. Reservation via NPS.
  • Hottest time of year: July-August sees 100°F+ daily highs. Start hikes at dawn.

For Zion + Bryce Canyon + North Rim Grand Canyon — Utah "Grand Circle" route — plan 7-10 days minimum.

Do I need a reservation to enter Zion?

No — Zion does not currently require day-use reservations. However, Angels Landing hike requires a permit via recreation.gov lottery.

When does the Zion Canyon Shuttle run?

Typically March through November. In 2024, service began March 3 and continued through mid-November. In winter, private vehicles are allowed on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.

Do RVs need a tunnel escort?

Yes. The 1.1-mile Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel was built in 1930 and is too narrow for two-way traffic of oversized vehicles. RVs, trucks over 7'10" wide, or over 11'4" tall require an NPS-escorted one-way tunnel passage. Reserve via the park.

When does Zion parking fill?

Park lots fill between 8-9 AM during peak spring and summer season per NPS Zion. Arrive before 7 AM or park in Springdale and use the shuttle.

Are Zion traffic cameras free to view?

Yes. Every camera on TrafficVision.Live is free with no account required.
