What Are Custom Routes?

Custom Routes is a powerful feature that automatically identifies all traffic cameras along any route you specify. Instead of manually searching for cameras on each highway segment, the route builder calculates your path and shows you every camera from start to finish.

According to the FHWA, real-time traffic monitoring helps drivers make safer, more informed decisions. Research published in the FHWA Operations Benefit/Cost Database indicates that real-time traveler information systems can reduce incident-related delays by up to 40% by enabling faster detection and response. This is especially critical given that the average American commuter lost 54 extra hours to traffic delays in 2022, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's Urban Mobility Report.

Platform coverage: TrafficVision.Live aggregates 135,000+ cameras from 600+ official sources worldwide, giving you comprehensive coverage for route planning across highways, cities, and rural areas.

Use Cases for Custom Routes

🏢

Daily Commute Monitoring

Build a route from home to work. Each morning, open your saved route and scan all cameras in sequence to check for accidents, construction, or unusual congestion before you leave.

✈️

Airport Trips

Create a route from home to your local airport. Before heading out for a flight, check all cameras along the route to ensure you have enough buffer time.

🏖️

Weekend Getaways

Planning a road trip? Build a route to your destination and check camera conditions before departure. Great for beach trips, ski trips, or visiting family in another city.

🚸

School Drop-off Routes

Create routes for school runs. Check cameras in the morning to see if there's unusual backup near the school or on feeder roads.

📦

Delivery & Logistics

Professional drivers can build routes for regular delivery paths. Monitor conditions before starting runs to optimize timing and avoid delays.

Sharing Routes

Every saved route has a unique shareable link. Use this to:

  • Share with family: Send your commute route to a spouse so they can check conditions for you
  • Coordinate with coworkers: Share office-to-client routes with your team
  • Help visitors: Send route links to out-of-town guests so they can monitor traffic on their way to you
  • Social sharing: Share routes on social media when reporting traffic conditions

Pro Tip: Multiple Routes for One Commute

Create 2-3 route variations for your commute—your primary route plus alternates. Each morning, quickly check all of them and take whichever has the best conditions. This takes under a minute and can save 20+ minutes of sitting in traffic.

Custom Routes vs. Favorites

Both features help you monitor cameras regularly, but they serve different purposes:

Feature Best For Use Case
Custom Routes Monitoring a specific path from A to B Shows all cameras along a calculated route. Ideal for commutes, trips, and any journey with a defined start and end.
Favorites Monitoring specific locations regardless of route Save individual cameras you want quick access to. Ideal for monitoring a specific interchange, your neighborhood, or scattered locations.

Power users combine both: Save a Custom Route for your commute path, and add Favorites for specific trouble spots you want to check independently.

Try Routes and Favorites

Use both features together for complete traffic awareness. Routes for paths, Favorites for key locations.

Tips for Better Routes

Camera Density Varies

Some highway segments have cameras every mile; others have gaps. If your route shows few cameras on a section, supplement with weather apps or radio for that segment.

Check Before Rush Hour

The best time to check your route is 10-15 minutes before you'd normally leave. This gives you time to see conditions and adjust your departure or route choice.

Name Routes Clearly

Use descriptive names: "Home to Downtown Office" is better than "Route 1". Include key highways in the name for quick reference.

Update Routes When Needed

If you move, change jobs, or find a better path, delete old routes and create new ones. Keep your route library clean and relevant.

How many routes can I save?

There's no limit on saved routes. Create as many as you need for different commutes, trips, and destinations.

Do routes update automatically if construction changes the path?

Routes are static—they show the path calculated when you created them. If your regular route changes, simply delete the old route and create a new one with the updated path.

Can I edit a saved route?

Currently, you need to delete and recreate routes to change them. We're working on an edit feature for future updates.

Do routes work offline?

Route paths are stored and work offline once loaded. However, camera feeds require an internet connection to stream live video or images.

Can I see alternate routes side-by-side?

Create multiple routes with different paths and open them in separate tabs or windows to compare camera conditions across different routing options.
